When we say ‘book your off-grid escape at The House in the Hill’, we don’t just mean that we’re out in the country, away from hectic work schedules or busy social lives…

Farmers, or caretakers of the land, have an appreciation and love for the countryside that is, possibly, unrivalled. We see nature in every season, in every weather, at its best, and at its worst, every single day. So, when we decided to build a luxury holiday house and share our little slice of the countryside, we knew we should always aim to make as little an impact as possible on the plants, creatures, and landscape surrounding The House in the Hill. So, how do we do that?

Perhaps most obviously, The House is built into The Hill, on the site of an old quarry on our family farm. This reduces the visual impact of The House as it blends into its surroundings. The grass field surrounding The House will continue to be home to some of our sheep and the ground-nesting birds we see and hear every day at The Hill.

We have also reduced the environmental impact of the project by sourcing and repurposing many of the materials for the build from the farm. The stones that are to be used for the dry-stone dykes and the retaining walls around the property are all from the old quarry and the initial excavation work done at The Hill.

And finally, The House in the Hill has been built completely off the national grid! Our luxury holiday let relies solely on a combination of solar and ground sources for its power and heat, and the property's natural spring water comes from a newly formed borehole.

So, hit ‘Do Not Disturb’ and head truly off-grid at The House in the Hill, knowing that we’ve made as many eco-conscious decisions as we can. Book your guilt-free stay in the Scottish Borders this autumn now!
