It won’t be long until we can welcome guests at The House in the Hill, so we thought now is a good time to start sharing the different things to do in the Scottish Borders. We know that not all of our guests will be coming to stay with us for the same reasons, so let’s start with some things that you can do if you’re looking to unwind because, let’s be honest, we all need to do a bit more of that…
Book a sauna session with Cedar Hus
Cedar Hus offers the chance to reap the benefits of a sauna session ‘in the wild’, with their mobile sauna, Beyla. Having experienced the benefits ourselves, we can confirm that an open or private session looking out onto some of the Borders’ most beautiful natural spots does wonders for the soul. You can check out their website for available sessions and to find out more about their collaborative experiences, too!
Explore one of the many walking routes in the Scottish Borders
There are so many different routes to walk in the Scottish Borders, some of the best known ones include the Borders Abbeys Way, St Cuthbert’s Way, and Dere Street (which passes right by The House in the Hill). Think rolling hills, breathtaking views, and scenic pit stops… avid walkers will never be disappointed with a trip to the Scottish Borders.
Wild swim
If you’ve read our round-up of ‘Wild swimming spots in the Scottish Borders’, you’ll already know our favourite places to go for a cold-water dip. If you haven’t had a chance yet, check it out and get ready to immerse yourself (literally) in nature.
Grab a coffee & a good book at The Mainstreet Trading Company
Is there anything better than finding the perfect ‘holiday’ book? At The Mainstreet Trading Company in St Boswells, just a 20-minute drive from The House in the Hill, you can pair book-shopping with ‘coffee & cake’ at their café. The Mainstreet Trading Company also runs fantastic author events throughout the year and has a gorgeous deli and homeware department, stocking independent food producers and brands.
Paddleboard
In the Scottish Borders, we are lucky to have a paddleboard hire company, owned by the lovely Audrey, that runs sessions from Easter through to the end of September at both Clerklands Loch (30 minutes from The House) and St Mary’s Loch (just over an hour from The House).
Paddleboarding is as strenuous as you make it. Float along and enjoy the peace (having left all screens at the water’s edge), or see how your balance holds up while you go as fast as you can!
Stay put!
The House is fully equipped so that guests have everything they need for a short break. It is secluded, quiet, and surrounded by nature, so if curling up with a good book, bird-watching, or spending an hour or so in the hot tub is more your thing… just switch off and stay put at The House in the Hill.
