The Scottish Borders is one of Scotland’s most vibrant regions — packed with historic traditions, world-class sports and literary magic. Whether you’re planning a weekend or a slightly longer stay at The House in the Hill, here are some of the must-see events in 2026 to add to your calendar...

Common Ridings & Jethart Callant’s Festival

One of the most iconic Border traditions, the Common Ridings celebrate centuries-old customs of riding the town boundaries with colourful horse processions, music, storytelling and community spirit. Common Riding season runs through May to August with events in all the main Border towns. Each festival features traditional ride-outs, parades and civic celebrations that are immersive and truly unique to the area.

In Jedburgh, the Jethart Callant’s Festival is a highlight for horse lovers and history buffs alike. In 2026 the festival spans June and early July, with key dates including Declaration Night on 15 May, multiple ride-outs through late June and early July, culminating in Festival Day on 10 July.

If you plan to stay at The House in the Hill in June, we would recommend planning a break that includes the 21st of June, when the Callant and his mounted cavalcade pass right by The House in the Hill and down through our family farm on their return journey from Morebattle.

Borders Book Festival – 11–14 June 2026

Mid-June each year, the Borders Book Festival brings words to life in Melrose. Expect author talks, panel discussions, storytelling sessions, wellbeing workshops and a buzzing festival atmosphere set against the beautiful backdrop of Harmony Garden. It’s a great cultural stop for visitors of all ages.

Edgefest – 4–6 September 2026

For music lovers, Edgefest is the Scottish Borders’ biggest music party. Held at Lilliardsedge Holiday Park just 5 miles north of Jedburgh, this relatively new festival features great live acts, local food and drink, and a community-focused vibe. It’s perfect for a late summer weekend break.

The House in the Hill is just 20 minutes from Lilliardsedge by taxi, and is the perfect place to stay if you'd like to unwind in the hot tub after a long day singing and dancing at Edgefest!

Kings of the Sevens Rugby Series

The Scottish Borders is the home of rugby sevens — with events across the spring season as part of the Kings of the Sevens series. In 2026 the circuit includes stops at Hawick, Berwick, Kelso, Selkirk, Jed-Forest and Melrose, among others, bringing fast-paced action and fierce competition to Border rugby clubs.

Most famously, Melrose Sevens — where the sport was born — returns on 23 May 2026 at The Greenyards with world-class sevens rugby and festival atmosphere.

Borders' Rallies (Jim Clark & Border Counties)

Motorsport returns in 2026 with the Jim Clark Rally taking place from 22–24 May 2026, based around Duns. This thrilling closed-road event is part of the British and Scottish Rally Championships, offering action over multiple stages and a great weekend for fans of high-octane sport.

Meanwhile the Border Counties Rally takes place earlier in the year, bringing local motorsport excitement to stages around Elibank, Yair and the Tweed Valley.

We have ample parking available at The House in the Hill if you’re visiting for any of the rally and classic motoring events in the area.

Tour o’ the Borders – Cycling Sportive (6 September 2026)

For cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts, Tour o’ the Borders is a scenic closed-road sportive showcasing the region’s stunning landscapes. Routes vary from 88 km to 120 km with challenging climbs and breathtaking views, finishing with a buzzing event village in Peebles.

The House in the Hill is well-equipped for both road cyclists and mountain bikers, with a secure drying room and bike store at the property.
