No matter when you visit, there are always things to do in the Scottish Borders for those looking to experience something a bit different. From outdoor activities to alpacas, there is an adventure to suit explorers of all ages when you visit The House in the Hill.
Hire e-bikes for your stay
There are a number of cycle routes around the Scottish Borders, and with an e-bike charger at the House and e-bikes available to hire locally, you can explore the local tracks and trails at your own pace with just a general level of fitness. We recommend getting in touch with Go Electric if you’d like to have bikes dropped off ahead of your arrival at The House in the Hill.
Visit our neighbours at Beirhope Alpacas
Our lovely neighbours at Beirhope Alpacas offer one of the most unique experiences to those visiting the Scottish Borders. Join Lynn and her team for an Alpaca Trek in the Cheviot Hills, where you can embrace the outdoors, enjoy fantastic views of the valley and make friends with one of Beirhope’s charming alpacas (Kale is our favourite). Beirhope Alpacas is just 5 minutes along the road from The House in the Hill, so make sure to check out their availability ahead of your stay.
Book an outdoor activity in the area
The Scottish Borders is a rural area, full of people who are passionate about making the most of time spent outdoors. You’ll find a number of businesses offering activities for all abilities and ages, whether it’s fishing with The Country Sports Centre, horse-riding at Kailzie Equestrian Centre or clay-pigeon shooting at Bisley at Braidwood, there are plenty of opportunities to try something new when you visit The House in the Hill.
Follow in the footsteps of the Romans…
If you’d prefer to combine an adventure with an appreciation of the area’s history, make sure to go along Dere Street. This historic path (just two minutes from The House in the Hill) was one of four major strategic roads built by the Roman Army in Britain more than nineteen centuries ago. Well mapped and signposted, you can follow this route right into Jedburgh or further out into the countryside and the Cheviot Hills. If you’re looking to find out more about the Roman occupation of the Borders, head to Trimontium at Melrose which “tells the story of the Roman Empire’s invasions of Scotland, and of the local peoples’ interactions with the legions.”
Venture further afield & explore Northumberland 250
“The Northumberland 250? But aren’t you in the Scottish Borders?” Well, yes, we are but we are also very close to the official route for the Northumberland 250 as it cuts through Jedburgh from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Kielder Forest. Whether you fancy completing the full route or you would prefer to tick off some key spots along the way (whale-watching on the Northumberland coast anyone?) The House in the Hill provides a peaceful, luxurious base to explore from - whether you’re heading north or south!
If you have a specific adventure in mind for your stay at The House in the Hill, please get in touch with us ahead of your visit and our team will happily provide some recommendations and local intel!
